Five must-have beauty products to transition to spring

Now that winter is hopefully coming to an end and spring is beginning, it’s time to shift our go-to beauty products to those that will brighten our complexion so we can radiate bright spring vibes.

If these items aren’t in your arsenal, it’s time to invest in them! Even if you do, give some of these a try! As always, all of the products are natural and ethical.

Toner is new to me. I was late to the skincare/beauty game and am now finally investing in products I should have started using long ago. After washing your face, using toner is essential to even your skin tone and soothe your skin. However, be wary of using toners that are alcohol-based. They say they’re great for acne, but alcohol dries out your skin and can leave it feeling tight unhealthy. Try these water-based toners instead!

For dry skin:                                        For combination skin:                                  For oily skin:

Highlighters are also fairly new to me, but I envy everyone who can use them flawlessly. It’s my new goal. Fortunately, I’m just in time for spring—and you can be too! Spring is all about brightening your wardrobe and beauty regimen to come alive as nature around us starts to bloom. Try applying (a small amount of) highlighter to the tops of your cheekbones, the top of your nose and your cupid’s bow to bring some shine to your look without being overdone.

However, highlighters are tricky when it comes to ethics. There are definitely organic highlighters available for most skin tones such as these from RMS Beauty and Alima Pure:

These are great products to try if you’re just looking to apply products that won’t harm your skin. These products, like 95% of highlighters out there, contain mica though. Mica is the agent that makes these products shimmery, which is great for us but not so great for those who produce them. The production of mica has been linked to child labor and testing on animals. Teen Vogue’s De Elizabeth wrote a great article about this that I have linked here.

So, while there are currently limited options for highlighters without mica, there is hope! Companies like Lush are working to eliminate mica from all of their products, such as this skin tint that can act as a highlighter:

Bright Lips

Lip have recently become my new favorite part of my makeup regimen. I used to be extremely conservative when it came to lips, usually keeping them natural. Lately, I’ve been so much more daring and I LOVE the idea of using some bright colors this spring. Organic and ethical lip colors that actually work can be hard. Some are not pigmented enough or don’t last very long. Try finding lip colors that are super pigmented and make sure you read the descriptions and reviews on how long they are supposed to last. These products from Lush and RMS Beauty are a good place to start:

BEWARE: If you are planning to try to heed my warning about mica, make sure you read the ingredients list for lip colors. Many of them (especially glossy, shiny colors) tend to include mica as well. The two listed above do not!

Hair Conditioner

I always love switching up my hair products during spring/summer, because I enjoy giving my hair a lighter, bouncier feel during these months. My favorite product to change is my hair conditioner. Hair conditioner can drastically change your hair depending on the ingredients and intentions. For spring, try conditioners that are lightweight and intended to promote hydration, like these from Yarok, True Botanicals and 100 Percent Pure:

UV Face Moisturizer

During the spring and summer, we all love to spend more time outside (the beaches are always crowded and it’s nearly impossible to find a decent spot to hammock on campus). While it’s important to moisturize your face year-round, switching to a moisturizer with UV protection during those months when you’re not running from building to building can help protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Some are tinted, some aren’t; but they work all the same to keep your skin healthy and lower the risk of skin cancer. Take a look at these products from Andalou, DeVita and Juice Beauty to start:

Whether you choose to purchase these specific products or not, they will give you a great idea of where to look for the right product for you!
